Lorna Babcock's interest in the simplicity of pen and ink drawing almost led her to a life of tattoo artistry. Yet ultimately when it came to drawing on people - she said she couldn't handle it. Instead, Babcock is taking her art to a new level with woodburning.

"I like things that are intricate," said the Frisco resident. Babcock's pyrography often includes wildlife images like pheasants, owls or elk amid a greater scheme of details.

Before moving to the mountains from Denver two years ago, Babcock worked with her husband contracting business for interior wall finishes, which she continues. She also did commissioned work for commercial and residential signs, including some of the chalkboard menus used by the Chili's national restaurant chain.

Nowadays Babcock, a graduate of the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and the Art Institute of Colorado, is still doing the occasional commissioned work, yet is focusing on her woodburning fine art. She does this while watching her 7- and 4-year-old sons.

Babcock's other art interests include painting murals and creating crafts.

Her handiwork will be for sale at the Holiday Bazaar coming up at the Silverthorne Pavilion on Dec. 1-2.

What are your dreams/what would you like to do with your art?

I am just now beginning to live my dream as an artist. I live in a beautiful town, and I watch over my children while I work on my art. My goal is to get into a gallery at some point.

What does art give you/why do you do it?

Art has always given me a retreat. There is a place that I go to mentally when I create - and that has always been very rewarding (and relaxing).

What do you try to convey through your art?

I try to convey anything that gets my imagination dancing! My love of nature and its sometimes perfect beauty.

What is/has been your biggest challenge, and how do/did you deal with it?

Learning how to be a contractor/business woman. Client by client it got easier. Business is sometimes challenging to the right-brained.

What are you most proud of regarding your art (and/or greatest accomplishment)?

I had the opportunity to paint murals for the children's wings in some Denver churches. I was given free rein over a whole bunch of rooms and I loved knowing that the art would inspire a lot of children. Of all the work I have been hired to do, those two jobs were the most fulfilling. I felt like a real success and I donated the work. It was fun!

How do you stay fresh/motivated?

It's never been a problem to stay motivated. Painting, drawing and woodburning is like breathing.

What do you do when you're not making art?

Spend time with my family and enjoy what I have been blessed with.
